I. THE EVOLUTION OF MASSAGE

-
The healing powers of massage have been recognized as early as the 5th century BC. Various forms of massage were employed by ancient cultures in China, India, Rome, Greece and Egypt.
-
We instinctively stroke and rub areas of our body that hurt. Massage therapy develops this instinct into a professional treatment. Massage, a systematic form of touch that comforts and promotes good health, is perhaps the oldest and simplest of medical treatments. In traditional cultures, especially in the East, it is accepted that people of all ages can benefit from regular massage. In the West its value has always been recognized in the world of sport, and its use has recently spread to other fields.
-
It was in the last century that the ancient healing art has been embraced by the New World and transformed into “modern day” massage.

II. THE MASSAGE

In World Wide Massage we acknowledge that touch is the core of massage. Research is providing the extraordinary effectiveness of touch. Surveys demonstrate that the simple act of massage has shown to have improved patients' morale and hastened their rate of recovery. Massage is not only physical; it contains much of psychology: understanding the patient develops through empathy. A good therapist is rooted in the inward resolution: "I am here to help."
-
Massage can be stimulating or soothing depending on the speed and depth of the strokes. It can relieve tension, soothe away headaches, relax taut and aching muscles and banish insomnia. It provides a context for recovery by inducing a sense of wellbeing.

World Wide Massage strives to provide you the best possible service.
We use professional massage cream with Arnica that is completely absorbed by the skin, which eliminates the necessity of taking a shower immediately after the massage. In fact, in order for the arnica to produce its maximum effects on the muscles, one should take a shower a few hours after the treatment, not immediately.

1. THE PETRISSAGE

Petrissage (from the French pétrir, 'to knead') is performed with kneading movement with the whole palm or finger tips, wringing, skin rolling, compressing and lifting. Petrissage is usually applied vertically to the muscle tissue.

The benefits include the warming of tissue for deeper work, increase circulation, increase the supply of nutrients and oxygen to muscle, softens superficial fascia, decreases muscle tension, and restores mobility by decreasing adhesion

2. THE SWEDISH MASSAGE

This style of massage is generally attributed to the Swedish fencing master and gymnastics teacher Pehr Henrik Ling (1776-1839). Swedish Massage utilizes long, flowing strokes, often, but not necessarily, in the direction of the heart. Swedish massage is designed to increase circulation and blood flow. There are six basic strokes: effleurage, petrissage, friction, tapotement, compression, and vibration. Talcum powder, oil, cream, or lotion may be applied to the skin to reduce friction and allow smooth strokes. During my therapy we will likely use professional massage cream, but you can opt for oil. -
-
-
Swedish massage generally combines long strokes and gentle kneading movements that primarily target surface muscle tissues. Swedish massage is what most people think of when massage is mentioned. It is a relaxing experience that promotes deep relaxation, relieves general muscle tension, and increases circulation.

3. THE DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE

Deep tissue therapy involves slow intensive strokes, deep pressure or friction to specific muscle groups and their surrounding tissues. This is mostly used to work out "knots" in the muscle Deep tissue massage aids in the restoration of range of motion and mobility to injured tissue.

This therapy helps alleviating stress and tension. It relieves muscle soreness built up in the body’s tissues during physical activity. By massaging the deeper layers of muscle tissues and often incorporating stretching, the therapist can maintain and improve range of motion and flexibility, bringing the client back to optimum performance. This technique is often used in combination with other massage procedures such as Sports Massage.

Deep Tissue Massage is suitable for most ages. It can bring relief from a wide range of acute and chronic conditions, such as work related problems, repetitive strain injuries, whiplash, falls and postural (structural) alignment problems that sometimes go back to childhood and adolescence.

4. THE ACUPRESSURE

Accupressure is a traditional Chinese medicine technique based on the same principles as acupuncture. It involves placing physical pressure by hand, elbow, or with the aid of various devices on different acupuncture points or accupoints on the surface of the body.
-
There are several hundred accupoints or "Tsubos", the focus of acupuncture, distributed along the meridians connecting points across the body which affect a specific organ, gland, or the nervous system. In order to relieve as much tension as possible, the therapist will concnetrate on the "tsubos" located on your back and shoulders.

5. THE SPORTS MASSAGE THERAPY

Sports Massage is often based on Swedish massage and uses techniques involving deep tissue work, cross-fiber friction, trigger points and stretching. It enhances the removal of metabolic wastes and relieves muscle soreness caused from workouts or competition. It can enhance an athlete’s sport performance and extend their career.

The technique focuses on the deep layers of muscle tissue aiming to release the chronic patterns of tension in the body through slow strokes and deep finger pressure on the contracted areas, either following or going across the fibers of the muscle, tendons, and fascia (connective tissue surrounding muscles, bones, and joints). By incorporating Friction and Trigger Response Techniques, it helps to break up and eliminate scar tissue.

- Maintenance: regular massage can help maintain and improve flexibility.

- Pre-event: a supplement to an athlete’s warm-up to enhance circulation and reduce
excess muscle and tension, prior competition.

- Post-event: used to reduce muscle spasms and metabolic build up that occur with rigorous exercise.

- Rehabilitation: It can be used as rehabilitation; by speeding up the healing process on acute or chronic muscle, tendon and ligament injuries.

Anyone besides athlets can benefit as well from this massage therapeutic technique, from people in physically demanding jobs to those whose occupation demands sustained mental activity increasing the danger of emotional and postural stress.

6. THE REFLEXOLOGY

Reflexology is an ancient form of healing that can be traced to the Egyptians over 4,000 years ago. Although reflexology is sometimes called foot massage, it is more than a simple foot massage.

This type of massage works the internal organs of the body through manipulation of accupoints or tsubos (reflex areas on the feet corresponding to all the parts of the body including the major organs -see chart) on the soles of your feet, applying pressure to certain points on the foot that correspond to organs and systems in the body.

Reflexology is very relaxing and is especially healing for people who stand on their feet for a long time, walk long distances, or have sensitive feet.

Studies support that applying pressure to specific areas on the feet can affect internal organs and body systems, thus promoting good health.

7. THE TRIGGER POINT WORK

A trigger point is an area of a muscle (about 50 cells) that may refer pain sensations to other parts of the body. Trigger Point Therapy applies manual pressure, or CO2 injections (injections not available), to these points. With the proper pressure, duration and location, immediate release of tension and improved muscular functioning may occur. This work is incorporated into other styles of massage therapy such Swedish and Sports Massage.

Sustained pressure is applied to areas of the body that due to stress or injury refer pain or tingling elsewhere in the body. This sustained pressure at specific points, along with proper breathing, relieves pain and enhances circulation in the affected area(s). This technique is related to accupressure.

8. THE TANTRIC MASSAGE

A tantric massage includes a full body swedish massage in addition to the tantric practices. Tantra is a means to achieving personal growth through pleasurable existence. Tantric massage will arouse your sexual energy, considered the source of all energy; it does not involve penetrative sex. Although ejaculation might occur as a consequence and during this type of treatment, it is not its aim. Tantric Massage concentrates on stimulating the blood and energy (prana) flow to and from the lower chakras and reproductive organs, which contributes to balancing the entire physical and subtle bodies.
-
Tantric massage uses naturally occuring and flowing prana and directs it to the lower chakras. Consequently, a peaceful and relaxed arousal of the sexual energy occurs that permeates through all the cells of your body and mind as it flows through the meridians. Should you opt for a tantric massage, we would concentrate on exploring how the energy is generated in the lower chakras, its enhancement through lingam massage enhancing the flow towards the crown chakra. After the Prana flowing through the chakras reaches every cell in your body, it projects itself to astral heights through your crown chakra. The aim is that you will experience from the subtle sensations of dim prana to the rush of energy through the entire body that accompanies this process in its ultimate stage.
-
A tantric massage will make you feel pampered, relaxed, and revitalized. Should you have any question, please feel free to ask.

9. THE AROMATHERAPY

Aromatherapy massage sessions commence with a brief discussion of your health history including your physical, mental, and emotional states. Using this information we will determine the appropriate essential oils for your treatment. On the other hand, you can always choose the aroma of your preference to achieve a particular goal i.e. relax or energize your body.

C. THE ADVANTAGES OF THE NINETY MINUTES SESSION

1. THE CHAKRA BALANCING PROCESS

In addition to the pleasurable sensations proper of massage, a ninety minutes session allows time to balancing the chakras. We will focus on the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th Chakras, located respectively close to the navel (“hara”) area, in the centre of the chest area (around the heart), in the throat area, and in the area between the eyebrows. Emotional blocks may be cleared with Chakra Balancing at the end of a massage session. Chakra balancing gives a powerful sense of release and deep healing. A ninety minutes session is recommended when balancing the chakras is one of the goals of the therapy.

-

2. THE DURATION AND TECHNIQUE VARIATION

A ninety minute session will allow the practice of more varied types of strokes. and the stroke duration will be increased considering your desires. During a ninety minutes we may emphasize on any body areas that you choose.

-

3. THE RECOVERY OF AWARENESS

Another advantage of a ninety minute session is the allowance of extended time for a full recovery of awareness. This is usually recommended after drifting into one self while the massage session takes place, which facilitates an easier transition into the vigil state as the Chakra balancing takes place to make you feel at your optimum energy level.
